New Effective Width Calculation Formula for Wide Range of Strength and Thicknesses and Method for Controlling Hole-Induced Strength Reduction of Member
The authors carried out bending analyses of thin-shell square cylinders using finite element method (FEM) to investigate the effective width. The accuracy of Karman's formula and Noma's formula were verified in the case of 270-1500 MPa materials. Furthermore, the authors proposed a new high precision formula based on these FEM results. The new formula improves the efficiency of a car body design. In addition, a strength and a stress distribution were verified in the case of the member has a hole. In general, the hole reduces a strength of a structure. In this study, the authors clarified a condition to detoxify the effect of a hole using burring.
