Freight Transport Mode Selection and Route Optimization Based on Generalized Cost

As China’s delivery industry expands over the last decade, competition from related businesses has been taking on new dimensions as customers are driven by rapidity and price of the package delivery service. This paper analyzes and quantifies the factors that influence the choice of freight transport modes from the perspectives of different delivery service requirements, and accordingly constructs the generalized cost function and Freight transport mode selection (FTMS) model. To fit the actual situation of delivery service, the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to carry out the node planning study of the spoke transport network, based on which the freight transport route optimization (FTRO) model is proposed. Empirical study of Shunfeng (a Chinese parcel delivery company) further confirmed that different kinds of delivery service have their own adaptations to different modes of transport. This conclusion underlines the importance of route optimization, which is conducive to reducing the generalized cost and hence the achieve economies of scale in the delivery network could be achieved.
