Freight Choice Modeling Incorporating Time Upper Threshold for China Railway Express

As an important carrier of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China Railway Express (CR Express) plays a critical role in the international trade between China and Europe. Increasing the market share of CR Express requires deep understandings about the effects of transport chain time and commodity characteristics. This paper focuses on the impacts of time upper threshold on shippers’ choice behavior. The upper time threshold is the longest international transport chain time that a shipper can accept. Based on D-efficient design, a two-stage survey was conducted in Yiwu and data was collected. Five model specifications were established to distinguish preferences differences of shippers. Estimation results suggest that time upper threshold has a significant influence on the choice behavior of shippers, and significant interaction effects between commodity characteristics and time threshold exist. In addition, shippers’ willingness-to-pay for different commodity under different time requirements exist a large difference. The market share forecast of CR Express incorporating time threshold will be more realistic.Keyword: China Railway Express, time upper threshold, commodity characteristics, interaction effects, willingness-to-pay, market share
