The Economics of New Urbanism and Smart Growth: Comparing Price Gains and Costs between New Urbanist and Conventional Developments

The foundations of New Urbanism are walkability, connectivity, mixed land uses, mixed housing types, exemplary architecture and urban design, increased density, multiple transportation options, sustainability, and quality of life. This chapter from The Oxford Handbook of Urban Economics and Planning provides a methodology for assessing the values and costs of New Urbanist features. First, the chapter reviews the history of the New Urbanism movement. It then compares differences in price premiums and construction costs between New Urbanist and conventional developments. Lastly, the chapter recommends future areas of research in the economics of New Urbanism and Smart Growth.
