Developing a Guide for Quantitative Approaches to Systemic Safety Analysis

This final report describes the research methodology and findings that supported the development of a systemic safety analysis guide and associated training materials. It presents a review of the literature related to systemic safety analysis and systemic safety management programs; the results of a state-of-practice survey of state and local agencies regarding their use of systemic safety management; summaries of in-depth interviews with agencies that have used systemic safety management tools and software programs; lessons learned about the implementation of a systemic safety management program; and areas for future research. The research described herein led to the development of several project deliverables, including: a guidance document on quantitative approaches to systemic safety analysis; a flyer to serve as marketing material to promote the implementation of quantitative approaches to systemic safety analysis; a document highlighting the benefits of systemic safety analysis to decision makers; a technical memorandum titled “Implementation of Research Findings and Products;” and a PowerPoint presentation that describes the background, objectives, findings, and guidelines from the research.
