European Electric Vehicle Factbook 2019/2020

An update on the European electric vehicle (EV) market through 2019 is presented, with a detailed look at sixteen of the largest national markets in the European Union and the European Free Trade Area. In each country, the metropolitan areas with the highest EV uptake are identified, along with the most popular EV models and manufacturers. The key financial and regulatory policies driving EV adoption at the European and national levels are also highlighted. The popularity of EVs in Europe continues to grow as production costs fall, the charging infrastructure expands, and awareness grows of the need to reduce transportation’s impact on climate. Europe is now the world’s second-largest passenger EV market with over 1.8 million registrations of battery EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs through the end of 2019. The EV share of the European fleet reached 3.6% in 2019, a rise from 2.5% just a year earlier. But EV progress within Europe varies widely between countries and metropolitan areas. It is important to understand this variation in order to identify effective policies and actions to further accelerate the adoption of EVs.
