Effect of Warning Piles on Driver Performance on Horizontal Curves

To develop practicable and clear guidelines for warning piles on low-grade highway in China, it is necessary to understand the effect of warning piles on driving performance in different settings and conditions. Two experiments were designed where each of them considered a distinct factor; one factor was color, consisting of two modes, red and yellow, the other factor was side, consisting of two types, unilateral and bilateral. A driving simulation experiment including four scenarios was carried out to obtain vehicle operation data. Secondly, the repeated analysis of variance was conducted to analyze the main effect and interaction of different color and side types on vehicle operation indicators, speed, and speed standard deviation. The results showed that the warning piles had a great influence on driving behaviors. The red bilateral warning piles made the driver more sensitive to the curve perception, thus maintaining lower speed to promote safe driving.
