COVID-19 Effect on Collisions on Interstates and Highways in the US
This study analyzed INRIX incident data for major U.S. metropolitan areas before the COVID-19 pandemic and during COVID-19, April through October 2020. Information presented includes: top collision corridors in the top 25 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) including the riskiest hotspots; vehicle miles traveled (VMT), travel speed, and collisions for the top 25 MSAs; and COVID-19's effect on collision rates along the top 3 riskiest corridors in each metropolitan area. Throughout the country VMT decreased significantly with the onset of COVID-19 with major metropolitan areas yet to recover. With lower VMT has come a reduction in traffic congestion and higher traffic speeds.
