PSR, the Next Generation
Part 3 of an article series that began in Railway Age, Vol. 221, No. 6. The current version of Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR), sometimes referred to as PSR 1.0, has produced measurable financial, operational, and service improvements for railroads. However, there is an increasing need to make supply chains more resilient, as trade disruptions, weather events, rail strikes and the COVID-19 pandemic take their toll. PSR 2.0, the next generation of PSR, is geared towards increasing relevancy in a world facing existential economic threats, increased competition and an ever-changing technological landscape. Part 1 of this article made the case for the adoption of PSR 2.0 as the foundation for extending PSR across the full ecosystem of rail and other transport and Part 2 explored factors that can potentially contribute to business and customer value. In part 3, the authors present the steps to fully realize the vision of precision railroading, including strategic implementation, risk mitigation, and developing critical alliances.
