Digitalizing Interline Settlements

Railinc has for years served as a central point for the transaction of settlements between railroads, through the administration of its Central Interline Settlement System (CISS) and Rate Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Network. This article explores efforts within the industry to identify technologies that would improve the process and outcome of electronic data exchange. Current legacy systems are likely not as flexible as is needed, and a digitized, cloud-based ISS offers potential for a number of improvements to the settlement process, including smart workflows for dispute resolution, interactive intelligent dashboards, and predictive analytics. The implementation of advanced technologies to support ISS can lead to the acceleration of revenue cycles, the reduction of overdue receivables, and the reduction of workplace capital for railroad operations.
