VEHICULOS AUTOMOTORES SEGUROS: REVISION HISTORICA

Abstract: This publication describes the main events that led the American automotive industry to design, manufacture and market safe vehicles capable of protecting drivers, passengers and pedestrians during crash events. This research highlights the importance of different stakeholders’ participation affected by the huge number of dead people as well as injured ones as consequence of road accidents occurred during the first seventy years of motor vehicle’s existence equipped with internal combustion engines. Likewise, the creation of different organisms known as New Car Assessment Programs ―NCAP― is presented. The first ever worldwide NCAP was born in USA during the 1970s promoted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ―NHTSA―. Afterward NCAP organisms were spread out toward every continent in the world. The NCAP’s primary objective is to evaluate the safety of new vehicles marketed in specific countries or commercial regions giving them specific rating based on the protection level offered to both the automobile´s occupants and pedestrians during a crash.
