IIHS Reopens Test Facility with Health Precautions

This brief article describes the changes and plans in place at the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) Vehicle Research Center (VRC) facility in Ruckersville, Virginia. The author notes that much of the Institute’s work continued after the COVID closure in March 2020, but crash tests and track evaluations were paused. In midsummer 2020, the VRC opened with a limited staff who began to undertake crash testing as well as evaluations of headlights and front crash prevention systems. All vehicles delivered to the VRC are either parked and isolated for two days or sanitized by raising the inside temperature of the car. VRC staff have continued publishing safety ratings, even while crash testing was paused. Some of the newer crash tests, originally planned for 2022, have been postponed until 2023.
