Students Compete in a Texas-Sized “Road-eo”

This article describes the Road-eo, an event sponsored by the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association (TxAPA), near Austin, Texas. The Road-eo is an asphalt team competition for 12 teams of undergraduate students representing 7 regional universities. Each team brings a 20” x 20” x 2” slab of compacted asphalt mixture they had fabricated in their own university labs, using materials provided to them by TxAPA. Each team could use different percentages of the aggregate and asphalt binder materials, according to their own mix process. The slabs were then tested for skid resistance, rutting resistance, and cracking resistance. Teams were also judged on the strategy and rationale they used in designing their asphalt mixture and the research they did to devise their particular approach. The author stresses the value of the competition not only for the inherent skills the students hone, but also to provide an open interchange between the students and professionals in the field.
