How E-Scooters Can Win a Place in Urban Transport

This paper uses experiences with e-scooters in the US and Europe to examine the economics of e-scooters, early lessons learned, the experience of major providers, market penetration, and forecasted growth. Using population density, bicycle friendliness, weather, and percentage of students in the population, seven micromobility archetypes are identified for cities. This analysis indicates that 750 US and European cities could support e-scooter micromobility in the future, a substantial growth potential. It is suggested that e-scooters will be a part of urban mobility for years to come and providers and city leaders will need to work together for successful integration. Some areas for cities to pay attention to include environmental sustainability, equity, pricing strategies, vehicle longevity, regulation, and infrastructure investment.
