INDIGENOUS MATERIALS FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

This paper is essentially the text of an oral presentation for this conference. It is a general introduction to the subject of use of indigenous materials. A strong recommendation is made for use of indigenous, versus imported, materials for use in developing countries. Brief discussions are made on definitions, indigenous versus imported materials, reasons to use indigenous materials, size of the problem, urban versus rural, specifications, upgrading of existing structures, problems in use of indigenous materials, over-specialization, and priorities in planning. A recommendation is made that materials be chosen first, and that this decision govern choice of the structural system, all within practical limits of the available labor skills. This is in contrast to the general practice of making decisions on physical planning and structural systems first, and letting choice of materials be governed by those prior decisions. A strong recommendation is made that modern technology be used to upgrade properties of indigenous materials as feasible. (Author/TRRL)
