A Handbook on Sustainable Urban Mobility and Spatial Planning: Promoting Active Mobility

The purpose of this handbook is to assist Member States of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region with sustainable urban transport planning. The overall approach is to integrate transportation, health, quality of life, and environmental objectives into urban and spatial planning policies. The handbook begins with an examination of global trends in sustainable urban mobility and an overview of the Transport, Health, and Environment Pan European Programme (THE PEP). Subsequent chapter topics cover spatial planning for sustainable urban mobility and accessibility; public transport planning; promotion of active mobility; societal changes and energy transitions; and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). The final two chapters detail the case for a comprehensive approach to a methodology for sustainable urban transport planning along with conclusions and recommendations.
