Highly Durable Super Noise Reducing Pavement and Composite Typed Bridge Deck Waterproofing System

The Metropolitan Expressway is an urban expressway which extends approximately 320km through Tokyo as the Japanese capital’s main distribution artery. Approximately 80% of the expressway consists of elevated sections. Daily traffic use reaches approximately one million vehicles with a high proportion of heavy vehicles, and traffic congestion also routinely occurs. The summertime road surface temperature exceeds 60°C, while in wintertime large amounts of salt are sprinkled on the road surface as freezing prevention measures. The expressway’s pavement and deck slabs are therefore subjected to a severe environment. Further, since the urban expressway passes close to buildings, limitation of the noise generated by the road surface and mitigation of the effects on the surrounding environment are required. The expressway’s many inclines, declines, and tight curves also necessitate the use of pavement that does not cause degradation of driving visibility in rainy weather due to water spray generated by vehicles in front. The Metropolitan Expressway therefore utilizes a “small grain size porous asphalt concrete” in the surface course, consisting of a binder which has an outstanding aggregate holding ability and permanent deformation resistance and a 5mm top aggregate. This realizes both an aggregate scattering resistance and a reducing ability of noises generated from road surface. The binder course utilizes a dense-graded asphalt concrete that uses a binder which has outstanding water resistance. For the deck slabs of elevated sections, “composite typed waterproofing” is utilized to prevent reinforcing bar corrosion due to the permeation of rainwater and salt. This waterproofing combines a resin which penetrates into the cracks of the deck slabs and a heat application type polymer modified asphalt waterproofing agent that does not easily become stuck to the tires of finishers and dump trucks. This paper introduces examples in which severe environments incurred by the pavement and deck slabs have been overcome by utilizing outstanding polymer modified asphalt technology in the paving and waterproofing.
