Life Project: Cool & Low Noise Asphalt in Paris

The European Environment Agency reports that 37 million European citizens are exposed to transport noise at levels considered dangerous to their health [1]. In Paris, around 22% of the population is affected by noise pollution, mainly due to road traffic noise. Furthermore, climate change is a major concern for European cities. Studies have shown that over the past 30 years, heatwaves have become increasingly intense and of longer duration in Europe; the 2003 peak temperatures in Paris and their significant health impact are a relevant example. The International Panel of Climate Experts estimates that this trend will worsen in the coming years as a result of climate change. The LIFE Cool & Low Noise Asphalt project, initiated in 2017 with a 5-year duration, is led by the City of Paris, the road contractors Colas and Eurovia and the association Bruitparif. Its aim is to meet these two environmental challenges by developing innovative types of bituminous mixes. The main objective is to design these mot mix asphalt surfaces with both noise reduction and thermal properties, and acceptable durability, in order to create practical tools to directly improve the quality of life of city dwellers. The project aims to refine the properties of three types of asphalt widespread in Europe (two compacted asphalts and one hot-mix mastic asphalt) allowing reproducibility not only throughout Paris, but also throughout Europe. This article presents the objectives of the project and its progress to date. The design of these mixes has been successfully completed, including a sustainability assessment. Pilot sites have been established and initial results on noise measurements and the thermal behaviour of pavements will be available by the end of 2019. In the event of good results, the monitoring of the pilot sites will be carried out for an additional four years.
