Strategic rail reprofiling for squat mitigation

After being presumably under control, the Squat type defects resurfaced in the late 1990s on an almost epidemic level. These new defects showed different characteristics compared to the Squat defects observed in 1980s and before. Therefore, a different name (Stud, Squat type defect) was introduced. Research activities with respect to this defect type focus nowadays on prevention of initiation. Rail maintenance if applied correctly can help with respect to this problem. Especially rail milling technology as part of a strategic rail reprofiling program can contribute significantly to the mitigation of Studs as it can address several important factors with respect to Stud initiation and growth. However, to solve this problem a holistic system level approach will be required that considers all contributing factors to this very complex defect.
