New ETCS level 1 architecture

ETCS is the train control system of the future. It improves the international train traffic. By an adequate application of ETCS the capacity and safety of a railway network will rise. But a rise of capacity is not only depending on ETCS itself, furthermore it is the interaction between interlocking, train protection and track layout. A new architecture of ETCS Level 1 and a digital interlocking is described that improves the interaction between both systems. The resulting benefits are outlined. A comparison to ETCS Level 2 concludes the paper. It is shown, that the presented new architecture does not need to fear a comparison to ETCS Level 2.
