The challenges of system integration

Transport for New South Wales, together with Sydney Trains, is embarking on the ambitious and ground-breaking task of transforming the Sydney rail network through the introduction of digital technology to improve capacity and deliver a safer railway. The key elements involve the deployment of the ETCS Level 2 overlain with automatic train operation (ATO) and a traffic management system (TMS). Drawing on the lessons learned from Britain and Europe in delivering similar technology, Network Rail Consulting, as the Digital Systems Integrator working directly for the Digital Systems programme in TfNSW, has the role of defining, developing, implementing and integrating the new ETCS Level 2 and Traffic Management system onto the first deployment areas on the Sydney Trains network. The Integrator’s work started in Nov 2018 and is broken down into two key phases. The first period lasting around twelve months, is the definition and development phase followed by phase two, which covers design, delivery and bringing into service to be complete by 2024. This paper draws on the experience of the last year of this programme and the many lessons from similar projects globally that have embarked on similar technological upgrades to their networks.
