Making a transformation possible: innovations behind the digital systems project
Digital Systems will transform the way the Sydney Trains network is operated and managed. The program includes the adoption of world-leading technologies such as cab signalling using ETCS, Traffic Management, and Automatic Train Operation to support train drivers. The program also includes changes to ways of working and roles, where necessary, to support the new systems. Many rail networks around the world have embarked on initiatives similar to Digital Systems and the experience is that these projects, in a brownfield environment, are extremely difficult – often taking many years longer than anticipated, and costing multiples of the initial budget. Recognising this reality, from the outset a focus has been on understanding the factors leading to success or failure and the lessons learnt have been embedded in the framing of Digital Systems, to ensure the lessons are truly learned from and not repeated. The resulting approach to deploying Digital Systems represents an innovation significant on a global scale and the program is widely recognised as one of the most exciting of comparable initiatives worldwide.
