Best practices for rolling stock mid-life overhaul: an alternative to new rolling stock acquisition

Rail operators need to meet customer expectations regarding public transportation in terms of safety, reliability and comfort. Quite often, the maintenance of an ageing fleet represents a significant challenge for the rail operators and obsolescence issues strongly limit the operation of some vehicle fleets. As an alternative to a new rolling stock acquisition, which cannot sustain the whole demanding market growth on its own, the refurbishment of critical vehicle parts is a valuable alternative. Through close collaboration between operators and components suppliers, a rolling stock mid-life overhaul not only solves obsolescence issues but also provides several additional advantages, such as better train reliability and an improved passenger experience. A close collaboration between components suppliers and vehicle operators also helps to maintain local site activities and create new job opportunities.
