Life Support

A bridge initiative by Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) aims to preserve valuable infrastructure on U.S. 2. The wet weather that the state is known for means that the travel infrastructure is plagued by constant potholes, as well as other problems. Population growth also stresses the system with highway traffic congestion, especially in metropolitan areas. Due to a relatively short window of an annual 90 days of fair weather, repair projects must be completed in an efficient manner. Bridges within the WSDOT National Bridge Inventory must undergo a detailed inspection every two years. This article focuses on the U.S. 2/I-5 interchange and its rehabilitation. Details of the project, from the initial assessment and planning to contract bidding and execution to the reconstruction process and materials selection, are presented. Due to the project's size and complexity, it serves as a model for future WSDOT pavement preservation initiatives.
