TAXI PRACTICES AND IMAGE: THE SOCIAL FACTORS DETERMINING SUPPLY AND DEMAND
PRATIQUES ET IMAGES DU TAXI : LES DETERMINANTS SOCIAUX DE LA DIALECTIQUE OFFRE-DEMANDE
Two examples are used to approach the taxi problem: that of a large provincial town, Lyon, and that of two small towns of approximately a few thousand inhabitants. The author shows that it is necessary to take into account the social conditions of the groups which use taxi services and the personality of the taxi operators. It is concluded that the taxi was the subject of a historic evolution which gave it a place somewhat apart from public transport services and made it an essentially privately-based activity. (TRRL)
