Preliminary FEM-DEM Study on Ice Encroachment

Ice encroachment may cause damage on Arctic offshore structures and is one of the main considerations in the design of marine structures. Ice can ride up directly onto an inclined structure or it may accumulate on it as the broken ice pieces are pushed by the advancing ice sheet. Here the authors shortly present a study on ice encroachment on a wide inclined structure. The study is based on two-dimensional combined finite-discrete element method simulations. The paper examines how water depth and ice thickness influence the probability and severity of ice encroachment.
