A PROCEDURE FOR PREDICTING THE SPEED OF SURFACE SHIPS IN ROUGH HEAD SEAS
A procedure is outlined for predicting the maximum attainable speed of a conventional surface ship (with or without an SQS-26 sonar dome) in irregular head seas. The procedure is based upon some fundamental principles of ship motion, the wave length-wave energy relationships expressed by the Pierson-Moscowitz formulation for sea spectra, and an estimate of the natural periods of pitch and heave oscillation for the ship in question.
