URBAN PLANNING AND DESIGN FOR ROAD PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The report is concerned with the practical development of public transport and details basic characteristics and requirements for a good bus service. The report has as its objectives a) to explain essentials for good bus transport in urban areas, b) to develop guidelines for effective services between residential, industrial, commercial and shopping areas, C) to encourage closer co-operation between those responsible for transport and urban development, and 4) to provide a basis for improving community bus transport services. The following chapters detail the characteristics and requirements of bus transport: Nature of public transport: Vehicle characteristics; Road public transport in the planning process; Criteria for bus routes; Highway design and traffic management for buses; Town centre design; and, Bus stations and interchanges.
