SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION, SECTION D011, NEW CARROLLTON ROUTE STORAGE YARD

Results of four undisturbed sample borings and fifty-six wash borings made in a low-lying swamp area in the planned storage yard in Section D011 of New Carrollton Route of the Washington Metropolitan Area Metro system are summarized. The investigation supplemented two earlier studies and was intended to provide information relating to the extent of the organic deposits in the swamp and their probable performance when loaded by embankments for trackage and various other yard facilities. The report contains a contour plan showing thickness of the swamp deposit, geological sections through the borings, logs of the borings, result of a number of laboratory tests on undisturbed samples of the organic material, conclusions regarding its properties and a summary of anticipated design and construction problems.
