More Than Just Cameras: Video-Based Onboard Monitoring Systems for Fleet Safety

This article examines a video-based driver monitoring and crash risk mitigation system that could provide significant safety benefits for trucking fleets. Research helps to develop and integrate hardware and software for a comprehensive, low-cost, easy-to-install driver monitoring and assistance system, which offers driver and administrator feedback on crash risk factors. Video-based systems allow fleets to: see crash causes and exonerate drivers quickly when they are not at fault; monitor when a driver exceeds the speed limit for fuel consumption optimization; identify top-performing drivers; and identify riskiest driving behaviors. Very few fleets, however, have the internal resources needed to review large volumes of video footage. For this reason, the best configuration for most fleets is to have a robust exception-based video recording system that deploys artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning—along with human review. The author suggests that an in-vehicle monitoring system supplemented by a managed service allows fleets to focus on risk areas that have the biggest impact, alleviating the burden of extensive video review and analysis.
