ENERGY CONSERVATION AND ROAD SAFETY

Those aspects of road user behaviour, vehicle characteristics and the road and traffic environment that relate to both energy conservation and road safety are being considered in this project. During the first year the unit has: (1) conducted a critical evaluation of the work that has been done overseas on the effect that the size of the car has on the safety of its occupants in a crash and analysed relevant Australian data. (2) reviewed the safety aspects of certain traffic control measures that have energy saving implications. (3) assessed the state of the practice (rather than the state of the art) of lp gas conversions, including the investigation of a crash involving a lp- gas fuelled car. (4) drafted recommendations for action and for further research. (TRRL)
