MOORING LINE FORCES ON AN OSCILLATING BUOY IN A UNIFORM CURRENT

The report describes a dynamic model of a vertical moored taut cable which is subjected to a low velocity transverse flow and which undergoes small harmonic oscillations at its upper end. Calculations based on this model yield estimates of the dynamic force-displacement relations at the upper end of the cable. The model is generic in nature: starting from a very crude representation valid only at low frequencies, it can be extended to apply to successively higher frequencies. This variable approximation property allows estimates of the effect of the mooring cable on the dynamics of a tethered buoy or instrument array to be made with a minimum of complexity. (Author)
