This state-of-the-art report documents the constituents of highway runoff and their pollutional effects. It provides a general background about the problem, its recognition and the emerging emphasis to address the problem and its solutions. It discusses highway design and drainage characteristics and their relationship to runoff quantity. An extensive review of the available literature on the quality of stormwater runoff from urban areas in general and from highway drainage areas in particular, has been made. (FHWA)
