Minnesota Statewide Airport Economic Impact Study

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) conducted a study of the annual economic impacts generated by 126 of Minnesota’s 133 public airports. In addition to the 126 study airports, there are seven public airports owned by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC). The MAC previously completed two economic impact studies and those results were integrated into the 2019 Statewide Airport Economic Impact Study to estimate statewide totals. Minnesota airports contribute $18.2 billion annually to the state economy. Primary study objectives were to: (1) estimate the annual economic impacts that the state economy realizes from the day-to-day operation of eight commercial and 118 public general aviation airports; (2) estimate the annual economic impact realized as a result of aviation-related business tenants located at the study airports; (3) estimate the annual economic impacts resulting from capital investment at the study airports; (4) estimate the economic impacts from spending associated with visitors who arrive in Minnesota on privately owned general aviation aircraft at all 126 study airports and on scheduled commercial airline flights at eight commercial airports; and (5) estimate annual state and local tax revenues supported activities associated with study airports.
