AN ASSESSMENT OF METHODS OF PRESSURE DROP PREDICTION FOR SLURRY TRANSPORT
A number of different methods are available for the prediction of pressure drop for viscous non-Newtonian slurries in the laminar, transition and turbulent regimes. Pilot plant and full scale data for two cement slurries have been used to assess these methods. Prediction of the laminar pressure drop has been appraised in terms of suitability of the rheological model, corrections to the rotational viscometer data and identification of wall slip. The upper and lower transition limits have been considered by various theoretical approaches and experimentally. Prediction of the lower transition limit is satisfactory but the upper limit may be considerably higher than previously considered so that 'turbulent' data may really be 'transition' data. A selection of methods predicting the turbulent pressure drop is examined and recent approaches by Kemblowski and Kolodziejski and Hanks and Dadia appear particularly suitable. The latter is particularly notable as it is probably the most fundamental approach to date.
