MINESTONE AS FILL MATERIAL
Research into the use of minestone or colliery discard, as sole fill material has shown that if the material is well compacted there is no risk of spontaneous combustion as had been previously thought. National coal board-sponsored research is to include the construction of a number of reinforced-earth structures with minestone as the sole fill material. The project is planned to continuously record movements and stress changes, temperature and chemical reactions in the structures which also incorporate precast concrete facing panels and galvanised steel reinforcing straps. One of the principal tests will be the effects on the galvanised straps of sulphates and sulphides inherent in the minestone. (TRRL)
