L'EFFONDREMENT PARTIEL DU PONT WILSON A TOURS - SES CAUSES ET SES ENSEIGNEMENTS
The author was requested to start an inquiry on the causes of the partial destruction of the Wilson bridge and to derive lessons from the investigation. This article summarizes the main technical conclusions of the survey report established in July 1978. After outlining briefly the consequences of the collapse, the author recalls the chequered history of the bridge, the building of its foundations and the danger of scouring together with protective measures against the latter. The causes of the 1978 collapse are discussed together with the lessons that can be derived from the accident. The methods selected for reconstructing the bridge are described. (TRRL)
