Virtually all members of the automotive engineering community are aware of the pressing need to develop synthetic liquid fuels to replace petroleum-based gasoline and to reduce this country's dependence on imported energy. Such development involves a parallel need for industrial capacity to make and distribute these fuels in commercial quantities. A recent study by Exxon Co., U.S.A. has provided information on the timetables, economics, and environmental problems associated with the production of such synthetic fuels.
