REACTIONS OF VEHICLE DRIVERS. RESTRICTIONS AND DEPENDENCE

Concepts such as "reaction behaviour" or "reaction time" are products of psychological laboratories. It is proposed that the expression "reaction behaviour" should be substituted by "signal processing". Considerations are advanced towards transferring a laboratory concept into real situations. The psychical basis of reaction behaviour is described. A particular aspect of signal processing is the balancing of speed against accuracy. The individual has the choice, according to the situation, of working faster accepting a certain imprecision or taking greater note of accuracy, which costs more time. The balancing of speed against accuracy can be understood as a type of risk behaviour. The discussion on the reaction times of drivers shows that the speed aspect is one-sidedly favoured; more acceptable, however, is a balanced behaviour of speed and accuracy. (TRRL)
