PECULIARITIES OF TRAFFIC AT SIGNAL CONTROLLED INTERSECTIONS AT NIGHT
BESONDERHEITEN DES VERKEHRS AN SIGNALGEREGELTEN KNOTENPUNKTEN BEI NACHT
A particular pattern of behaviour may be observed by drivers and pedestrians at night which can be significant in the quest for road safety. A report is given on the results of observations of traffic which were carried out in connection with the question of switching off traffic-signal installations at urban signalised intersections. As a result an increased level of speed should be reckoned on at night on the major road, which could lead to greater danger from poor estimating by waiting road users. At signal installations not switched off pedestrians frequently disregard the red light. This misbehaviour is however probably compensated for by increased awareness since it does not result in accident occurrence. In order to meet the requirement for the shortest possible waiting time at night and to increase the acceptance of signal installations, it is recommended that improved traffic-linked control systems or at the very least special night-time programs should be installed.
