TRAFFIC REGULATING LAY-OUT AND FURNISHING OF STREETS FOR THE REDUCTION OF TRAFFIC IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS

VERKEHRSREGELNDE GESTALTUNG UND MOEBELIERUNG VON STRASSEN ZUR VERKEHRSBERUHIGUNG IN "WOHNBEREICHEN"

In order to provide the pedestrian, as the road user most at risk, with greater safety, at least in the so-called residential areas, and with the knowledge that speed reductions and general appeals for understanding remain largely unheeded, measures are suggested which should lead to a safer mixing of cars and people. Setts should compel more reasonable driving. Barriers and diagonal separating islands prevent through traffic. Narrowing of too wide residential carriageway surfaces by extending footpath widths and laying out alternating parking spaces reduces driving speeds and frequency. Experiments on these lines are taking place at cologne-ehrenfeld and cologne-mengenich. (TRRL)
