ANTHROPOMETRIC DUMMIES USED IN TESTS - NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A TEST DRIVER

VERSUCHSPUPPEN - KEIN ERSATZ FUER TESTFAHRER

In an impact test with an anthropomorphic dummy as driver and another dummy as co-driver it was shown that the measured forces and accelerations, safety belt forces, displacement and other factors were smaller in the case of the actual driver than they were in the case of the dummy. The driver withstood an impact at 50 km/h uninjured, something which was held to be impossible after tests with the dummy, but was expected following preliminary tests with the driver. Essential for this degree of safety is the present state of technology of crumple zones passenger compartments, seats, head rests and safety belt systems. The damage analysis demonstrates that the requirements of internal safety need not affect ease of repair. (TRRL)
