EXCAVATION PIT AND STRUCTURES WITHOUT SEALING IN GROUNDWATER

BAUGRUBEN UND BAUWERKE OHNE ABDICHTUNG IM GRUNDWASSER

This report covers construction methods with and without groundwater lowering, their dangers and the avoidance of these dangers. The use of various methods is explained with some typical examples, in which local groundwater lowering is carried out without water draw off, floor drains and pump wells and floor and wall grouting. Questionnaires and literature studies from some 30 representative projects without sealing and uplift prevention measures are assembled. Many years experience with many projects demonstrate that both the groundwater lowering and groundwater sealing are both tested and suitable constructional measures for keeping excavation dry and for assisting uplift of structures of all types and sizes. For groundwater lowering in soils with low permeability, drains are the most suitable measure. In the case of soils with greater permeability filter drains are the most suitable for groundwater lowering. When it is necessary to avoid substantial groundwater lowering, groundwater sealing must be undertaken. (TRRL)
