35 YEARS OF PAVEMENT DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE

The paper traces many of the design changes that have been made since World War II as engineers have reacted to increases in loads and as more research has provided information on specific problems related to pavement design details. A plea is made for openminded design, taking into account performance information from other projects in other states and other countries, as well as from research in field studies and laboratories. The perfect maintenance-free pavement may never be developed, but we can "farm a lot better" than we are now in many cases. (Author)
