The aim of conservation of resources and energy by reduction of vehicle weight, helps improve running performance but generally produces negative effects in terms of noise and vibration. To reduce noise and vibration inside the car and the weight of the car at the same time, it is necessary to re-examine the conventional method of reducing noise and vibration, and deal with the problem by a more advanced method. What is important in regard to noise and vibration inside the car is the noise and vibration of the drive train, and many useful studies on the drive train have been reported in Japan. Vibration of the drive train can roughly be classified into bending vibration and torsional vibration. Generally, they are combined, and may have non-linear characteristics. All this makes the problem quite complex. This report introduces a selection of previously announced, important study results which have been edited to enable the reader to understand the outline of the studies on noise and vibration of the drive train in Japan. The report covers the following: drive train vibration analysis (linear and non-linear vibrations); engine surge and drive train vibration; differential gear noise and drive train vibration. (TRRL)
