CONCRETE WINDBREAK BARRIERS: AN INTEGRATED SAFETY SYSTEM FOR MOTORWAY BRIDGES

BARRIERE DI CALCESTRUZZO PIU FRANGIVENTO: UN SISTEMA INTEGRATO PER I PONTI AUTOSTRADALI

High motorway viaducts across valleys in Italy are subjected to cross winds, steady or in gusts, which sometimes exceed 100 km/h. Such winds constitute a danger to traffic and this article describes and illustrates concrete windbreak barriers mounted on the Gorsexio Viaduct (Autostrada dei Trafori). The barrier consists of angled slats fixed to posts mounted on top of the safety kerb at the edge of the viaduct, making an overall height of 2.50 M from the surface of the road. Details are given of wind speed measurements, and of the design of the barrier which can be of metal or concrete, constructed as an integral safety barrier, or adaptable as an addition to existing kerbs.
