ORWELL PAYS THE PRICE FOR UNUSUAL DESIGN

A description is given of the unusual systems being employed in the construction of the viaduct which follows a vertical curve and right horizontal bend for nearly 1 km across the Orwell estuary near Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. The viaduct's deck comprises twin prestressed concrete box girders. Details are given of the special gantry designed and fabricated for constructing the east and west approach spans, and its use.
