ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION FROM SURFACE IMPOUNDMENTS IN IDAHO

Waste impoundments in Idaho were located and inventoried with respect to their contamination potential of groundwater using an assessment technique. Select sites are being checked using surface electrical resistivity soundings in an effort to field-verify assessment ratings. A minimum of three soundings have been taken at each site using the Schlumbege array. The field procedure determines the background geoelectrical conditions near the site while subsequent soundings locate the contaminant plume. This application of geophysics to groundwater quality assessments is still being researched but will be useful in eliminating costly hit-or-miss drilling. (Author)
