CLASSIFICATION OF SLOPE MOVEMENTS

CLASSIFICATION DES TALUS ET VERSANTS INSTABLES

This report, based on 20 years of experience, discusses subjective and arbitrary aspects of proposed classifications, when replaced in multidisciplinary perspective, and difficulties of the classifier task, taking into account the ambiguity of terminology, the variety of phenomena analyzed, the diversity of origins, the nature of affected materials, the frequent coexistence with different processes in a same mass movement, and the evolution of characteristics with time. After a brief summary of existing classifications, selected criteria are discussed with reference to practical applications and includes dynamics of movement, scale, speed of displacement, water content, nature of discontinuity between affected materials and local substratum.
