STRENGTH AND DEFORMABILITY OF HIGHLY FRACTURED ROCK-DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

This discusser holds that triaxial tests on cylinders of materials with oriented weaknesses cannot be interpreted correctly by the Mohr theory, and neither can such tests be valid if the surfaces of minimum strength cut through the end steel plates. Comments are also made on the borehole jack tests for determining the deformability of the rock mass, and on rock classification systems. The authors, in their closure to the discussion reply to the issues raised.
